Mark Making: Hilma af Klint with Melanie Lan

Mark making describes the different lines, dots, marks, patterns, and textures we create in an artwork. It can be loose and gestural, or controlled and neat. We each have our own unique way of mark making, and discovering their limitless possibility is part of what makes art so immensely joyful!
This workshop draws inspiration from Swedish visionary artist Hilma af Klint. In her work, af Klint explores mysticism, duality, spirituality, and light & dark through abstraction. She was ahead of her time, painting in abstraction well before Kandinsky, Mondrian, and other modernists, and had the foresight to obscure her work from the world until society was ready to accept it.
In this session we’ll emulate af Klint's signature use of color blocking, symmetry, and simplified shapes to convey a sense of energy, and curiosity for the unknown.

Join zoom 15 minutes early (10:45am) for an informal meet and greet with the instructor and other class participants! Session instructions will begin promptly at 11:05am PT so that everyone has plenty of time to join!
SUGGESTED MATERIALS:
- 2-3 pieces of watercolor paper (5”x7” or similar size, but this is flexible!)
- All your favorite watercolor paints
- Water
- A ruler, plus something to draw or trace a circle with
- Mixing palette or enamel tray (a ceramic dish also works!)
- Brushes, at least one larger and one smaller, flat brushes are welcome too!
- Pencil
- Paper towel
- Scrap paper for swatching colors and sketching
- Optional: tape (artist tape, or masking tape, or washi tape!)
- Reference images will be provided
ABOUT MELANIE
Melanie Lan is an artist and illustrator based in NYC. She earned her MFA in painting at the Burren College of Art in Ireland, and has an interdisciplinary background in painting, cross-cultural studies, and somatic psychology. Her work explores the intersection of healing, meaning-making, and the natural world. In her free time Melanie is a selenophile who loves tide pools, stargazing, big trees, and long walks with good snacks.
